Presenter Cha In-pyo — The Memory of Puerto Rican Korean War Veterans Still Living Today
Actor & Author · Presenter for KBS Korean War Special Documentary
In August 1950, when the Korean War erupted into a critical crisis, the United States Army 65th Infantry Regiment, renowned as the "Borinqueneers", deployed into the theatre of operations. Hailing from the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico, these soldiers took pride in their warrior heritage from the indigenous Taíno people.
During the Battle of Chosin Reservoir and the historic Hungnam Evacuation in December 1950, the 65th Regiment formed the critical perimeter protecting the 1st Marine Division and holding off overwhelming enemy forces, allowing more than 100,000 Korean refugees to board ships to freedom.
743 soldiers made the ultimate sacrifice and thousands were wounded. However, because Puerto Rico was a commonwealth territory, their flag was not officially raised alongside the sovereign UN nations, leaving their monumental heroism overshadowed for decades.
Actor and author Cha In-pyo participated as the presenter, lending his authentic voice to trace the forgotten heroes. "Why did we only come to learn of these brave souls after 70 years? Their sacrifice must not remain buried in history. We must ensure their names are permanently honored in stone."
KBS utilized extended reality (XR) studio technology to recreate the Puerto Rico memorial and the snowy battlefields of the Korean War in realistic holograms. The documentary earned widespread critical acclaim and was awarded Best Television Work on Korea Broadcasting Day.
Our foundation will carve an exclusive memorial tablet on the upcoming monument honoring the 65th Infantry Regiment and all 63 nations.
